warning, warning... boobs alert!
How many times have you tried your 'normal' dress size on in one shop, only to find that that 'normal' size is hideously too small or gaping in the wind? Personally my own wardrobe varies from size 10s all the way through to 16s, and although going up a size used to make me bristle, I've grown to learn to accept that what's on the label doesn't necessarily count.
I'm guessing you fashionable lot are with me on this, yes?
Now look in your lingerie drawer... and more importantly at your bras. I bet most of you will have probably been wearing the same cup size for as long back as you care to remember. I certainly have - and I pride myself in my lingerie habit (it's those pink Agent Provocateur boxes - I can't help myself!).
As followers of my blog will know, my boobs and I have had quite a journey. Pre breast reduction I was a 32F/G, later reducing to a C cup. And while my weight has fluctuated I've kind of always stuck to a similar cup size.
So, when I was invited by Bravissimo to come in for a bra fitting this weekend, I absolutely jumped at the chance. Bravissimo don't fit by the (bloomin' complicated!) measuring tape method and instead train their team to fit by eye. Quite sensible really when you think that, just like different brands of clothes, lingerie is manufactured independently by each supplier, so while one brand might offer a little extra depth under the arm, another might offer slightly less volume in their cups.
And goodness, the girls in my local Bravissimo branch (Ingram Street in Glasgow) couldn't have been more helpful. My fitter was friendly and funny - and put me at ease immediately (no bad thing as I stood topless, chatting away!) She explained the supporting benefits of a good bra (counteracting neck, shoulder and back pain) and fitted me into various shapes, styles - and patterns and colours - good god Bravissimo has a heeeeuge range, including this gorgeous vintage styled set which sadly just didn't fit right on me, although normally I would have probably just picked up my size and bought so the fitting room advice ended up saving me pennies really.
Bravissimo clearly have a very loyal customer base as the store was peppered with glowing reviews from 'normal everyday folks' all over the walls and marketing materials. The changing rooms themselves were spacious with lots of handy hints and tips displayed in a quirky, vintage fair manner (oh, and I quite fancied the silky dressing robe too - oooh lalala!)
And the result? Well, I ended up going down a back size, up a couple of cup sizes and leaving with one of Bravissimo's best selling own brand sets (Alana) in the most delicious festive colour**. The balconette style bra sits like a dream - lifting and supporting my boobs in a way that actually makes my silhouette look slimmer while improving my posture. Wiiiiiin! :)
Bravissimo also do own brand clothes (cut to fit your curves - no more gaping shirts ladies!) and swimwear, and sales start nationwide on 23 December.
Very good post Ann! I love the colour of your set

and by set I mean your undies rather than your boobies ahaha
ReplyDeleteLoved this post!
ReplyDeleteI struggle with sizes etc, Im 32G and more than often wish smaller :( Good on you for getting a reduction, I often consider it myself at times!

Just read your post about your 'boob journey', I'm so happy everything worked out for you. I have been on a long journey too and I finally feel comfortable and a good bra really helps with that.
ReplyDeleteBravissimo really is the best place to go. They sell really good fitting bras with straps wide enough not to dig in and they are always really friendly when I go in to the Cardiff branch.
I love that teal/blue colour, it's great to get really supportive bras in colours other than nude or white
x
Aww I love the Bravissimo Glasgow ladies, they're all so lovely! Being a 36H (ugh) bravissimo is one of the only places where I can find brilliant fitting bras that don't scream 'granny', especially as lots of pretty underwear sets stop at a G cup. I love the colour of the set you bought, so nice! xx
ReplyDeleteI've been meaning to get a fitting for absolutely yonks but haven't really got round to it but next time I pop into Nottingham I will definitely pop into Barvissimo (I hate the idea of measuring with tapes too!) xo
ReplyDeleteGreat post and such a pretty set. Bravissimo are great I really must go back for a fitting myself it's been ages! x

You're so right! I have clothes in every size in my wardrobe cos now that I'm all grown up and don't really give a shit about the label, I just look at something and guess whether it will fit or not.
ReplyDeleteBUT, all my bras are the same size! I lost weight about 6 years ago and got fitted for new bras and since then, I've just continued to pick up the same size - bad me!
I will make a more concerted effort in the sales - I will take a good look at my lady lumps and just judge by eye.
Great post and beautiful pants and bra x
Hi Ann, Holly from Bravissimo here. We’re so happy to hear that your bra fitting went well and we’ll pass on your lovely comments to the ladies at our Ingram Street shop x
ReplyDeleteYay! I feel weirdly proud of you for posting this - god knows I dont think I'd have had the courage to pose in my bra for this post! So lovely to hear you got great service, makes a total difference. I hate buying bras, I have no idea of my cup size (I THINK I am a 34 DD???) and I always - and I mean ALWAYS - end up getting bras that either have me popping out when I bend over or gaping ridiculously under the arms or at the sides. I just really hate stripping off in front of folk but after this I'll defo be considering a wee trip to Bravissimo :) xx
ReplyDeleteyou put me to shame iv not been measured since before i had the boy and im hella sure they've changed since then! xxx
ReplyDeleteI honestly feel like I have NEVER had a proper fitting bra! Really need to sort this soon :( Wanting to get some nice new bras soon, I only have little 'uns haha but I defo think I will pay the bravissimo folks a visit. Just read your journey post, thanks so much for sharing <3 was really interesting to read, and in the comments box hear other peoples experiences/thoughts too xx
ReplyDeleteHaha, good post! Just found you via VIXPO, am your newest follower x
ReplyDelete32G woman here. :-) I was lucky, in that I had a part-time job selling lingerie in a department store, while I was in school. As a young woman, I learned all about correct sizing & fit. I bristle whenever I see women walking around with bra bands up between their shoulder blades. I secretly roll my eyes when a skinnier-than-I-am woman tells me she's a 36B, knowing her band size couldn't possibly be that much bigger than mine.
ReplyDeleteBut here in North America, there is a lot of confusion over bra sizes. I hear-tell that, in the U.S., cup sizes stop at D, and larger cups are just multiples of D. (So I would be a 32DDDD...or...according to other sources, it may even be 6 D's.). Then some American companies say I should add 5" to my band size, pretty much ensuring it would end up between my shoulder blades. No wonder women don't know which sizes they are!
For me, the proof of the pudding is in the eating, and my goal is simply to have no spillover, a band that goes around my ribs parallel to the floor, and keeps my breasts half-way between my shoulder and my elbow. I don't care one bit about which size that is. I just need it to be so.
Even within the properly-sized bra community, I find a lot of variation. In my favorite sports bra style, for example, I'm a 32G. In another bra style, I'm 30G. Still, in others, I'm more like a 30 or 32H.
As I said, whatever does the trick.
I will say this, though.... For me, there's no question. Forget the silly experiments that compare breast sag after forcing bra-wearers to go months with no bra before comparing them to habitual non-bra-wearers. At least in my case, I have worn a bra nearly all day, since I started wearing bras and, at almost 50 years of age, my 32G's don't sag. What I mean is, there is still space between the bottom of each breast and my rib cage. Sure, they're a bit lower than they were at age 20. Then again, I wasn't a G-cup at age 20. (more like C or D.) my point is, I firmly believe (pardon the pun) that routinely wearing a properly-fitted bra is about the only thing that will prevent noticeable sag, over time. ...Well...that, or breast implants, I suppose.
I don't think women should obsess about having perky breasts into retirement years. For me, it's been a happy accident. I was aware of bra sizing, and always had a natural disdain for bouncing cleavage. So with an innate desire for proper support, I just always found myself in well-fitted bras; they simply didn't permit droop. I got lucky.
In the same way that, when young women are sometimes startled to learn I'm not in my early 20's, I might caution that I stay out of the sun and have worn sunscreen every day since I was 20, I might also point out that a well-fitted bra may keep their breasts wherer they want them, no matter what age. I'm guessing that once those connective tissues are stretched, there's no turning back. ...Best to prevent sag, in he first place.
To those of you with a larger chest GO TO BRAVISSIMO - THEY ARE THE BEST!!
ReplyDeleteTheir fitters are friendly and you're not obliged to stand topless in front of them, as they'll happily wait outside your door while you try things on and then knock before they come in to check everything fits correctly and your boobs are where they should be!
Their clothes are fabulous too as they go by curviness size as well as dress size.
I can't reccommend them highly enough.
(And no I don't work for them, they've just transformed my 32H life!!)
:-)
… and MY 32H life, too. Ditto to all said by Job! Just need them in France now – and, please, more shops in the UK with clothes too.
ReplyDeletethey are brilliant at Bravissimo - I also make the trip to Leeds and sometimes even York!
ReplyDeletewouldn't buy from anywhere else!
I've been looking for a good place in Glasgow to get sized, 'cause my boobs have definitely grown since I went on the pill! I keep seeing Bravissimo recommended, but do they not only stock for D-KK cups? I'm waaay smaller than that! Any ideas?
